Thy National Park
- Bøgsted Rende & Klitmøller

Hiking trails, adventures and places to eat

Bøgsted Rende

Bøgsted Rende is one of the most breathtaking natural areas in Thy National Park.

The water in the trench has a brownish-red color due to the presence of ochre, which is due to oxidized iron compounds from the adjacent ditches.

Bøgsted Rende Båke, one of just 11 remaining landmarks, rises majestically above the vegetation. The impressive sea mark with its characteristic hourglass-shaped top is painted in red and is constructed of solid iron girders and wood. It was built between 1884 and 1885 and served as a landmark for seafarers.

In the area, you can also admire many of the 200-year-old trees that originate from one of Thy's first plantations, Thagaards Plantage. The oldest living trees in the area were planted at the end of the 19th century.

Klitmøller and Cold Hawaii

Klitmøller is a charming fishing village and a lively seaside resort with a beautiful beach. The town has a number of inviting restaurants and cafes and cozy little shops.

Many of the older houses in Klitmøller were built in the heyday of shipping, and they are still well preserved, which gives a sense of an atmosphere from the old days.

In the 1980s, the area around Klitmøller was discovered by surfers, and in the early 1990s, some Danish surfers began to settle there.

Today, Klitmøller is world-renowned as the capital of Cold Hawaii, which is a surfer's paradise. The name Cold Hawaii derives from the area's special wind and weather conditions, which are famous for their similarity to the surfing areas of Hawaii.

In fact, there are as many as 31 registered surf spots in Cold Hawaii, giving both beginners and professional surfers ample opportunity to explore the waves. The area around Klitmøller in particular is ideal for wave, wind, kite and stand up paddle surfing (SUP).

It should be noted that Klitmøller is pronounced with the stress on "møller" and not on "klit" as many non-locals often pronounce it! 😉

The grazing project at Trøjborg

Konik horses have been introduced to graze the area all year round on the former shooting range along the Trøjborgruten.

The project aims to create more habitats for the unique plant life and animal life in the dune nature. Species such as sandlizard, silver-studded blue and Niobe fritillary butterfly will all benefit from horses grazing in the area around Trøjborg south of Klitmøller all year round.

The state-owned area in Trøjborg extends over 220 hectares. Here, the horses will have the opportunity to graze freely all year round, including in the parabolic dune Tingbakken, where there are also small dune lakes with the rare water plant shoreweed, as well as forest areas with mountain pine and dune pine, where the animals can find shelter.

The grazing project at Trøjborg aims to give nature a helping hand and at the same time obtain knowledge about the effects of this type of grazing. The horses that roam the area will naturally create sand holes and trampling tracks, which will create a dynamic and new habitats for different species. In addition, it is hoped that year-round grazing can keep the growth of beach rose in check.

Konik horses are a strong and robust breed that is well suited to year-round grazing. The horses are monitored daily and their movements are recorded via GPS.

The hiking trails

Below you see the selected hiking trails from the hiking area with mileage.

We have prioritized the trails with our favorite trail in the area as the first.

The ideal order of the trails in terms of transportation is as follows

Following this order will minimize the distance traveled between the trails.

  • Grubebakke route 4.5 km
  • Bøgsted Rende route 2.5 km
  • Thagaards Plantage route 2.9 km
  • Tvorup Hul route 2.4 km
  • Gryden route 1.8 km
  • Kystskrænt route 1.3 km
  • Trøjborg route 2.9 km

You can choose to skip paths so that the distance fits what you want to walk.

For example, if you want to walk 13.8 km, you simply skip the Tvorup Hul route, the Gryden route and the Kystskrænt route after you have walked the Thagaards Plantage route and go directly to the Trøjborg route.
