Hiking trails, adventures and dining spots
Hanstholm
In the northwestern corner of Thy, at the tip of Northwest Jutland, you find Hanstholm.
Hanstholm is a modern industrial and commercial town that is one of Denmark's largest commercial fishing ports. Located on the open sea, the city encapsulates the harsh and majestic climate of the west. Here you will find a wonderful combination of sea, harbor and history.
Hanstholm has a lively harbor environment, where Denmark's largest fishing auction is located. Here, business customers who want to buy can bid on fish in an impressive environment with large facilities and efficient business processes. The auction is definitely worth a visit.
The harbor is undoubtedly the beating heart of the city and a great place to take a stroll if you have time. Here you can enjoy the fresh air, the beautiful view and meet friendly fishermen. The hustle and bustle is reminiscent of what you normally only experience in larger commercial cities.
Hanstholm also has the added advantage of being home to a popular surf spot! The surf spot is located at Roshage, just below the three impressive windmills. It is the northernmost surf spot out of the approx. 31 spots that also go by the name "Cold Hawaii".
Hanstholm Bunker Museum
In the approximately 100,000 square meter area at Bunkermuseum Hanstholm you will get up close to World War II in the strongest German fortress in Denmark.
The museum's enormous bunker was home to 90 German soldiers and housed one of the impressive 38cm guns. The bunker has a total size of around 3000 square meters and is thus one of the largest bunkers the Germans built in Denmark.
In the center of the museum bunker stood one of the four 38 cm guns that made up the German coastal battery "Hanstholm II". The big gun has not been preserved, but some of the bunkers' rooms have been restored and brought back to their original appearance with original equipment.
In the other rooms, you will find exhibitions that shed light on various aspects of the history of the fortifications.
In the museum's modern exhibition building, the Documentation Centre, you can experience exciting exhibitions about the people who lived in and around the bunkers, as well as about the weapons that were used in the Atlantvolden bunkers.
Bunker Museum Hanstholm is beautifully situated in some of Denmark's most scenic surroundings at the edge of the North Sea and Thy National Park. The unique open-air museum around the museum bunker and the bunker museum covers an area of approximately 100,000 square meters and forms the western part of the German 38 cm battery.
In the museum area you can see various bunkers that have been excavated in this part of the battery. Remember to bring a flashlight!
During the summer you can take a ride on the old ammunition train that runs through some of the large bunkers in the large open-air museum on the restored 1.2 kilometer long railway. Please note that the train only runs during certain periods and not all year round!
Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve
Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve spans almost 40 square kilometers and constitutes the largest continuous sand dune heath in Denmark. The landscape is a beautiful mosaic of large flat plains, known as blow flats, and majestic dune formations.
The bird tower in Sårup, located in the northwestern part of Tved Klitplantage, offers a fantastic view over the inner and more sheltered areas of the Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve. Remember to bring a good pair of binoculars, as they will help you spot wildlife.
Around the lakes in the area you can experience a rich wildlife at different times of the year.
In March-April there is an opportunity to be lucky and experience cranes dancing and trumpeting in the fields below the tower before settling down on their breeding grounds in the reserve. Later in the summer, you can see the cranes walking around in pairs with their young.
The bird tower is also one of the best places to observe the red deers in the reserve. In late summer, at times up to 400 animals can be gathered in the dunes next to the tower. Later in the rut, the herd is divided, when the large male red deer each form their own group, which they zealously guard.
When the deer roar across the wilderness on a quiet evening at sunset, you can almost forget the present and feel transported back to primeval times.
During migration, the inner reserve is visited by many resting birds. Every autumn, large flocks of pink-footed geese arrive from their breeding grounds on Svalbard, and over recent years the flocks of greylag geese have grown larger and larger, which is a fantastic experience in itself.
Tved Plantation
The plantation is located in a moraine landscape that is covered with drifting sand in various thicknesses and the area is surrounded by various natural formations.
In the west you will find the Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve, in the north and east stretches of farmland, and in the south lies Nors Sø.
The plantation offers significant height differences created by the varying sand cover, which provides a diversity of experiences when exploring the area.
The highest point in the plantation is Isberg, which rises 56 meters into the air. Then comes Ravnshøje at 55 metres, followed by Stavsbjerge at 53 metres. The bird tower in Sårup stands on a hill that is 45 meters high.
The varied flora in the plantation also offers exciting experiences. Here you can find many different species from the Nordic coniferous forest, including the small white flower called twinflower, which has been brought to the area by birds.
You can move through high-stemmed deciduous forests, low coniferous forest on the large dunes and on to the old coastal cliffs, where you can enjoy the view to the west over the Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve and the North Sea.
