Ejsing, Skånsø & Ådalen

Ejsing

Near Ejsing, the open West Jutland landscape meets the Limfjord in an interplay shaped over millennia by ice, water, and wind. The gentle hills and wide fields paint a vivid picture of the area's natural foundation and the close connection between land and fjord.

A few kilometers to the north, the Geddal coastal meadows stretch along the shoreline. These expansive meadows and shallow waters host rich birdlife and reflect the ever-changing light of the sky.

The area offers nature experiences for all the senses, where silence, birdsong, and the salty fjord air provide insight into West Jutland’s distinctive and vibrant coastal landscape.

Skånsø

Skånsø is one of West Jutland’s cleanest lakes, situated in a deep kettle hole formed during the last Ice Age. The lake’s clear, nutrient-poor water is home to characteristic aquatic plants such as the bluish-purple lobelia and the rare dark green quillwort, which have grown here for thousands of years and give the area its distinctive natural character.

The surroundings are shaped by plantation forest as well as dry and wet heathland, and along the lake’s shores there are meadows and small bogs that together form a green and varied natural landscape. These habitats attract a diversity of plant and animal life and illustrate how land and water meet in a living ecosystem.

The area around Skånsø offers experiences for all the senses, where the clear water reflects the ever-changing light of the sky and birdlife fills the air with sound. Here, silence, colors, and life come together in a vivid portrayal of a West Jutland lake landscape with high natural value and a distinctive character.

Ådalen

In the Ådalen valley northeast of Sevel, a narrow valley cuts through the West Jutland landscape, shaped by ancient Ice Age forces and left as a living link between hills, fields, and streams. Here, land and river meet in a calm, green setting, where meadows and grasslands stretch out around the gently flowing water and reflect the changing seasons in color and light.

Around the valley, the landscape varies between low-lying meadows and moist depressions, where plants and small animals thrive in a rich mosaic of grasses, reeds, and mosses. Birdlife can be experienced among the reeds, and the rhythm of the seasons shapes both scent and sound in the open landscape—a clear expression of West Jutland’s living nature and the valley’s importance as an ecosystem.

The nature around Ådalen offers sensory experiences, where the silence is broken only by the wind, the soft movement of the water, and the calls of birds. Here, the West Jutland landscape stands as a living expression of nature’s own shaping over time, offering insight into the river’s role within the broader connection between landscape, water, and life.

Experiences and sights

  • Stubber Monastery Ruins

Stubber Monastery Ruins are beautifully situated on a small peninsula by Stubbergård Lake. The ruins date back to a Benedictine monastery first mentioned in 1268 and show only part of the west wing’s cellar, which survived renovations and decay over time.

In the area, there is also a circular cattle enclosure with a surrounding earthen bank and traces of old driving and cart paths.
  • Sevel Kalkværk

Sevel Kalkværk (Limeworks) is a preserved limeworks site from around 1873–1960, where local limestone layers were used to produce mortar, hydrated lime, and building materials. Original buildings, such as the ring kiln, forge, and weigh house, can still be seen in the ruins.

Since 2011, enterprising locals, through the association "Friends of Sevel Limeworks", have restored the pot kilns and built an interpretation center, where visitors can today explore the history of the works.
  • Hjerl Hede

Hjerl Hede is a charming open-air museum on the Jutland heath, featuring over 50 authentic historic buildings, including half-timbered houses, mills, and Jutland’s oldest farmstead dating back to 1546. In summer and at Christmas, the museum comes alive with living historical performances and activities.

The museum also offers interactive experiences such as horse-drawn carriage rides, steam trains, historical crafts, and a playground for children—all set in scenic surroundings with gardens and animals.
  • VildEmil

VildEmil is an impressive troll sculpture created by artist Thomas Dambo in Tinkerdal Forest near Holstebro. He appears to be sleeping in a nest of spruce branches, and at approximately 2 × 7 meters, he is both enormous and subtly camouflaged within the terrain.

The troll was erected around 2021 as part of Dambo’s “troll project” and has become a popular destination for families and children—partly because finding him on the forest floor is a fun little challenge.
  • Tvis Mølle Naturlaboratorium

Tvis Mølle Nature Laboratory is a nature-rich educational area by Tvis River, featuring forest, meadows, river valley, and heath. It is designed to promote understanding of nature, culture, and the environment through active learning and experience.

Four themed laboratories—focusing on nature, water, cultural heritage, and health—offer hands-on experiences, such as fieldwork, meditation, and outdoor cooking.

Restaurants and cafés

  • Restaurant Paviljonen

Restaurant Pavillonen at Handbjerg Marina is a modern gem in the heart of the Limfjord, seating around 150 guests indoors and an additional 180 outdoors, all surrounded by scenic surroundings and fjord charm.

  • Sevel Kro

Sevel Inn is located in the heart of the small town of Sevel, surrounded by lakes, forest, and heath. This historic 18th-century inn exudes charm with its whitewashed walls and small dormer windows set in idyllic surroundings.
