Bøvlingbjerg and Møborg Bakkeø

Bøvlingbjerg

Bøvlingbjerg is a charming village in northern West Jutland, located between Bøvling Fjord and the North Sea. With approximately 485 inhabitants, the town offers a peaceful atmosphere and scenic surroundings.

The village has undergone extensive urban renewal, where collaboration between citizens and the municipality has created new communal spaces and improved the townscape. This initiative has strengthened the sense of community and given new life to the town.

Bøvlingbjerg is known for the Hornvarefabrikken, Denmark’s only manufacturer of hornware, where visitors can experience traditional craftsmanship. The village is also home to two churches and an active community life with activities such as archery, gymnastics, and football.

The shelter site “Gåsereden” (The Goose Nest), located near the old marl pits, offers a unique overnight experience close to nature. The site is named after the large flocks of geese often seen in the area and is a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts.

Moborg Bakkeø

Møborg Bakkeø is a prominent moraine hill rising above the surrounding heath plains. Shaped during the Saalian glaciation, it stands as a clear example of the “hill island” landscape characteristic of West Jutland.

At the top of the hill lies Møborg Bavnehøj, 45 meters above sea level, offering an impressive view across the West Jutland landscape. Historically, the hilltop was used for signal fires (bavns) to warn of danger during times of war.

Møborg Church, built in the 12th century, sits on a west-facing slope of the hill. Constructed from granite stones carried here by the ice, the church stands as a testament to the area's long and storied history.

To the east of Bavnehøj lies a former sand pit, now transformed into a recreational area with lakes, vegetation, and abundant wildlife. The area features hiking trails, shelters, and fire pits.
