The hiking trails

Below you see the selected hiking trails from the hiking area with mileage.

We have prioritized the trails with our favorite trail in the area as the first.

You get information about each hiking trail by clicking on the pictures.

Ideal order of the paths

We recommend that you walk the hiking trails in the following order (or vice versa) to get the least possible transportation distance between the trails:

  • Gammel Havn 1 km
  • Fur Bryghus-Knudeklinten 1.6 km
  • Knudeklinterne 5.8 km
  • Gammelgård 4.3 km
  • Den røde sten 3.2 km
  • Engelstør Odde 2.8 km

You can choose to skip parts of the trail so the distance matches how far you want to walk.

If you want to walk 10.8 km, you can skip Gammelhavn and the Fur Bryghus–Knudeklinten trails, and then start with the Knudeklinterne trail. After that, skip Gammelgård and walk Den røde sten and Engelstør Odde trails.

Be aware:

When the water level in the fjord is high, it can be difficult to pass some of the routes along the beach ( DMI ).

Please note that some of the paths may be uneven and slippery due to the mo-clay (diatomite). It is recommended to exercise caution and use appropriate footwear.

Experiences and sights

  • Gammel Havn (Old Harbour) Museum

The Old Harbour Museum on Fur tells the story of the island's fishing and harbour history. In the red bundgarnshus from 1925 there is an exhibition about the history of the harbour and the development of fishing in the Limfjord.

The museum was taken over by the Fur Museum in 1993, which has preserved the harbor basin and the bulwark. Here you can experience what life in the harbor was like in the past and get an exciting look at the island's maritime cultural heritage.
  • Fur Museum

Fur Museum combines natural and cultural history. The museum is known for its unique collection of fossils, including well-preserved 55 million-year-old fish, birds, turtles, insects and plants.

In addition, the museum offers exhibitions about the island's geology, landscapes and development over the centuries. The museum also presents "The Fisherman's Farm", where visitors can experience life on Fur over the past 200 years.
  • Bette Jenses Hyw

Bette Jenses Hyw, also called Stendal Høje, is the highest point on Fur Island, 75 meters above sea level. From here there is a fantastic 360-degree view of the island and the surrounding areas such as Salling, Mors, Livø and Himmerland.

The name originates from a burial mound further to the north but now refers to the viewpoint. The area is also known as a perfect spot for stargazing, where you can see shooting stars and maybe even the northern lights.
  • Bispehuen (The Bishop's Mitre)

The Bishop's Mitre (Bispehuen) on Fur is a striking geological formation in the Stendal Pit, the island’s largest raw material excavation site. Here, you can see alternating layers of volcanic ash and mo-clay (diatomite) exposed in the cliffs. An impressive column of folded diatomite stands near Rødstenvej and has given its name to the Bishop’s Mitre.

On the hill above Bispehuen stands the bronze sculpture *The Diatomite Man* (Molermanden), gazing out over the man-made landscape and further toward the fjord and Livø. Information boards, as well as tables and benches, have been set up near the sculpture and on the hill across from the mo-clay (diatomite) pit.
  • Den røde sten (The red rock)

The Red Rock on Fur is a large red sandstone cliff by the beach on the island's north coast. The rock's characteristic color comes from iron compounds that rust over time and are strengthened by the salty seawater.

This stone also has cultural significance; it has been used as a building material in medieval churches such as Fur Church and Viborg Cathedral.
  • Fur Man Museum

The Man Museum on Fur is a humorous collection of objects that have often been banished from the common home. The museum, located in the backyard of Café På Herrens Mark, contains objects such as moth-eaten wild boar skins and a plastic duck on a soldier's helmet.

Men are welcome to visit the museum, while women can look along but without speaking rights. The site also offers an exciting garden and orangery where you can relax after a visit to the museum.
