Stenbjerg Klitplantage
Stenbjerg Klitplantage is a scenic area that stretches over raised seabed and sandy soil. The terrain varies between flat plains and large dune areas.
About 5-6 kilometers from the sea, the old coastal cliffs from the Stone Age sea begin to rise. East of these slopes, where the soil consists of clay and gravel with underlying lime, you will find more lush vegetation. This is reflected in the choice of tree species and their growth in the area.
Stenbjerg Klitplantage was established from 1895, and the process roughly involved "rolling a mountain pine carpet" over the landscape. As the mountain pine established itself and served as shelter from wind and frost, other tree species such as sitka spruce, Norway spruce, Scots pine and oak could gradually be introduced under its protection.
In 2004, the dune plantation was hit by a violent forest fire that raged for 2 days and destroyed around 150 hectares of forest. Some areas have been cleared, while others have been planted with deciduous trees in groups. There are also areas that are allowed to stand until the soot-blackened trunks collapse naturally.
In the eastern part of the plantation, there are many burial mounds, including the impressive "Store Dyrehøj", as well as several exposed mounds along the coastal slope of the Stone Age sea.
Stenbjerg Landingplads
At Stenbjerg Landingsplads is a collection of the characteristic white fishermen's houses from the time when coastal fishing was carried out from the beach. These white tackle houses were built around the year 1900 to store and maintain the fishing gear when changes occurred in fishing methods.
The tool houses were built by the fishermen themselves, often by casting cement bricks on site. They were simple in their construction and materials and had an air of chance. These houses have been thoroughly restored in the year 2000, which has preserved their authentic character.
At Stenbjerg Landingsplads you will also find the listed rescue house, which was built in 1931. In the rescue house you can explore an exhibition about Stenbjerg's history, with a particular focus on the rescue service. The exhibition includes, among other things, a rowing rescue boat from 1892, which gives an insight into the rescue work of earlier times.
There is also a game house located a little away from the other houses on the top. This house functions as a small museum about the fishing at Stenbjerg Landingsplads. It can be an exciting opportunity to learn more about the history of fishing and its importance to the area.
One of the fishermen's houses on the landing site also houses an information center for National Park Thy. It is possible to buy coffee and other drinks in the information center.
Vorupør
Vorupør is an authentic and charming fishing village with a rich history in coastal fishing with approximately 800 inhabitants, from which coastal fishing has been carried out for several hundred years.
The town center along Vesterhavsgade is characterized by the houses that lead down to the landing site, which acts as the heart of the fishing village. The old warehouses on the landing site still bear witness to the fishing grounds' history, while shops, cafes and tourist attractions add their own unique character to Vorupør.
When there were the most, there were up to 27 large coastal boats fishing from Vorupør, but many fishermen chose to move to Hanstholm Harbor when it opened in 1967. Today, it is primarily recreational fishermen who sail from Vorupør Landingsplads.
Vorupør is also part of Cold Hawaii, which means that when the weather and wind conditions are right, there is plenty of activity at sea. This provides exciting experiences for both sailors and spectators on land.
If you are in the wild West Sea, there is also plenty of opportunity to take a dip. Vorupør has the country's first sea pool, which makes it possible to bathe in the fresh, salty sea water without worrying about high waves, undercurrents or rip currents. This adds a unique opportunity to enjoy the sea and have a safe swimming experience.
Here you will also find Denmark's first national park centre, where you can get information about National Park Thy and inspiration for all its experiences.
The hiking trails
Below you see the selected hiking trails from the hiking area with mileage.
We have prioritized the trails with our favorite trail in the area as the first.
You get information about each hiking trail by clicking on the pictures.
Following this order will minimize the distance traveled between the trails:
- Præstens Sti 4.4 km
- Embak route 5.6 km
- Fredskilde route 4.4 km
- Narkosak route 5.7 km
You can choose to skip paths so that the distance fits what you want to walk.
For example, if you want to walk 11.8 km, you simply walk the Bislet route instead of the Peace Trail after you have walked the Priest's Path and the Embak route.
Be aware:
The Fredskilde route can be shortened to 1.8 km by following the Bislet route, which starts at the same place. The Bislet route can be seen under the Peace Statue route.
You can extend the Nakorska route to the west to the large plain at Røddekjær.
The extension is marked with blue arrows approx. in the middle of the route (by the arrow on the map) and is shown in blue on the map. It can be seen under the Nakorsk route and the total route will then be 8.5 km.
