Saltum & Vildmosen

Hiking trails, adventures and places to eat

Store Vildmose

Less than a hundred years ago, Store Vildmose was a gigantic raised bog, Europe's largest, stretching over approx. 64 km² with a peat layer up to 5 meters deep.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the State acquired large areas in Store Vildmose. The 1920s saw the creation of grazing land, and the 1940s saw the beginning of large-scale peat production. In 1935, 19 farms and a central farm were built to quarantine cattle. From the 1950s, potato cultivation became important, and today Vildmosekartoflen and Pindstrup Mosebrug's sphagnum production are central.

Store Vildmose forms an open landscape characterized by sun and wind, with large, flat fields stretching into infinity, where thousands of cattle graze in the summer. The area also offers beautiful raised bog areas with a diversity of plant life, wild forests and old peat pits.

In the past, the bog was associated with superstition, especially at night, when people believed that trolls, elves, bog women, and giants ruled.

All year round, the red deer roam freely, and in winter, the bog is visited by swans, geese, and birds of prey. In spring, the bog blossoms in a riot of colors with white cotton grass in May, purple heather and cross-leaved heather, and red, edible cranberries in harvest time.

Experiences and sights

  • Vildmoseporten

Here you can experience one of the old stables as it looked in 1949. The old red wooden barn now houses the exhibition "Mosekonens Land", which is open every day of the week. The unmanned exhibition conveys knowledge about Store Vildmose in an exciting way.

The goal of the Vildmoseport is to preserve and protect the unique cultural environment in Store Vildmose. Vildmoseporten tells about the cultivation of the bog and gives visitors a total experience of a piece of Denmark's history.
  • The stepping stones

The stepping stones in Store Vildmose are found in the southern part near Centralgårdsvej, at the foot of the protected Nørbjerg, also called Aabybjerg. These large stones, spaced a step apart, point to the northwest, towards the second hill of the bog, Sandelsbjerg.

Dated to the Iron Age, the stones are thought to have had a practical function, probably to facilitate passage through the difficult terrain.
  • The viewing platform

From the viewing platform you have a nice view of the raised bog, and with a bit of luck you might spot a crane on the surface of the raised bog. The lower platform is accessible to wheelchair users.

Aaby Mose is one of Denmark's largest and best-preserved raised bogs and constitutes the best-preserved remnant of the original Store Vildmose.
  • The observation tower

In the middle of the breathtaking nature in Store Vildmose you will find the 7 meter high lookout tower at Manna Mosevej.

  • Egnssamlingen in Saltum

In Saltum you will find one of Denmark's most active local history collections. The regional collection has over 1,200 m2 of premises on 5 total registers, where the many exhibitions and working workshops present themselves beautifully.

Characteristic of Egnssamlingen is that every Tuesday morning all year round there are working workshops with a good 50 volunteers, and that separate activity days are held several times a year, where active children of all ages can immerse themselves in how things were done in the past.

Equipment for your hike

Naturting - Fjerritslev

North Jutland's completely unique rough and raw landscapes, the wind and the vast expanses can easily make us humans feel small, and in reality it may not hurt at all.

From time to time we all need to disconnect and find peace from a busy everyday life with fixed frameworks, jobs and many chores.

And that is exactly what nature can do. In other words, get us to lower our shoulders, relax and get the brain and body in free gear, all while the body is pleasantly active.

We know all that at Naturting, and we also know that the joy and experience of being in nature is much greater if you are properly dressed.
